Lighted Parade Details

The “Amundson” lighted boat parade started around 1983 when Ken Amundson took a single boat out along San Francisco beach on Christmas Eve.

This extract from notes by Holley Lilly explains a first hand view:

One Christmas Eve ( now believed to be 1983 ) from our terrace we watched a boat, decorated and lit from stem to stern, sail through the dark past our house.  All over San Carlos people watched that boat.  At the moment we first saw it, we swore that next year it would not be alone.  It was Ken and Margaret Amundson on their “Adonde”, and that was the start of the Christmas Light parade.

And so began a long time tradition. The Yacht Club is delighted to continue to sponsor the Lighted Boat Parade each year , an event people travel miles to watch !

Now in it’s 35th year you are invited to participate if you wish to enter your boat ( please register online ) or as a viewer you can make reservations with your favorite Restaurant taking part.

The parade will start before dusk with the line up in the Bahia , the lead boat will then take the parade around Indian head and out to sea to loop back into the bay adjacent to El Mar and The Palapa Greiga , a large loop will be executed there followed by further travel in the channel landward of Honymoon Island to again loop in the area of Charley’s Rock.  The return route will depend on seas and other conditions determined by the lead boat and pilot in charge. Eventually the boats will return to Marina San Carlos and dock for the night.

Thank you participants !
